Pat Boone in Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)

Pat Boone in Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959)

This is probably one of my favorite retro sci-fi/ fantasy film; exciting, imaginative, and nostalgic. Even at slightly over 2 hours, I was never bored; some events can be seen as slightly far-stretched, but the whole idea of going to the center of the Earth is so fantastical, I'm willing to overlook that and just go along with the ride.

Beside, the young Pat Boone is a cutie! Not shy about showing off his body, (probably gained a lot of new fans from this role.) he lost his shirt about 40 minute into the film, and stayed that way all the way till the end. (*cough* Ian Somerhalder *cough*) His naturally toned body is a nice diversion from today's overly obsession with chisel perfection.

  1. I saw this film in the theaters in its original run, and I remember a universal approving gasp from the collected females in the audience (and, admittedly, some of the males, too) when Boone stripped off his shirt. If you remember, he did so because the heated air was making it too uncomfortable for him to touch the metal breathing aparatus he had been carrying, and he intended to use his shirt to protect his hands. So his beautiful body -- as you point out, toned without being unnaturally ripped -- was also covered with a sheen of sweat.
